The Sun Conference Mens Baseball Tournament has been pushed back do to an excessive amount of rain. The Fields are drenched, the dugouts are drowning and the players are stuck indoors. After only one day of great baseball, the tourney has come to a screeching halt.
With only one day of game play underway, the Sun Conference Mens Baseball Tournament has been delayed at least one day. The rain came early Wednesday morning and continued to wash games out as the day went on. Embry Riddle and Ave Maria managed to find a break in the storms and start the first game of the losers bracket. Unfortunately they were only able to get through 6 innings.
The first day was fun-filled and full of upsets. The First game of the day was Embry Riddle (1) vs University of South Carolina at Beaufort (6). USCB was able to squeek by the Eagles in the 11th inning, beating Embry 2-0. The second upset of the day was Ave Maria (2) vs Southeastern University (5). The Fire beat the Gyrenes of Ave Maria 7-0 in a quick 9 inning contest. The third and final upset of the day was Webber International University (4) took on St. Thomas University (3). Webber overtook St. Thomas 4-3 after scoring three runs in the seventh inning to tie and one run in the eighth to take the lead.
The match ups that were scheduled for the second day were pushed backed over five hours to hopefully avoid some of the rain. Embry Riddle (1) vs Ave Maria (2) were scheduled to play at 5:30 PM and USCB was scheduled to take on St. Thomas at 7:30 PM. The game between Southeastern (5) and Webber (4) is scheduled to take place Friday,May 3, but no time has been announced yet.
The players all woke up to rain on day two of the tournament. Fortunately, there were covered batting cages for players to use, but that only passed an hour or two of the entire day. Teams have resorted to card games, watching movies and a lot of Monopoly to delay the onsets of cabin fever. If nothing else, the rain delay has allowed all the teams in the tournament to be able to bond and share a few laughs.
The players arrived early in Fort Myers, Florida April 29 to check-in to the hotel and attend a banquet that evening where there was dinner followed by an awards ceremony. Brian Muniz, Phil Kish and Johnnie Kirkland were all named First Team All Conference for Southeastern University. Daniel Mims racked up by earning All Conference Academic award, he was named the Sun Conference Champion of Character and was named Second Team All Conference.
